Hello fellow altruists! I wanted to update you on the free animal welfare app I'm co-founding, HumaneCheck - which lets grocery shoppers scan product barcodes for animal welfare grades, and nudges them toward plant-based & more humane alternatives in-store, nearby & for delivery. We're the Yuka for animal welfare!
After receiving support from Farm Forward and The Pollination Project, we launched a Kickstarter and have so far raised over $13K + been awarded a "Project We Love" badge.
The app is an evidence-based innovation that aims to reform our food system and reduce animal suffering -- but not via "all or nothing" vegan messaging (which most of the movement adheres to). The data shows this is counterproductive:
*<4% of the population is vegan
*Meat consumption is skyrocketing
*Plant-based consumption is nosediving (see Beyond Meat's stock)
*Extensive evidence showing people hate the words "vegan" & "plant-based" - and using them perpetuates a perception of radicalism among the movement
*Billions of people globally cannot afford a green diet
*Some plant-based options are healthy, some are not - we should not be advocating for a switch at the expense of our health
*Cultural barriers blocking a fully plant-based food system
We also respectfully disagree with a movement mandate to only support corporate campaigning (vs. consumer technology) - since corporate campaigns are bound to fail if we cannot demonstrate demand.
Please help us get the word out so we can build a better food system for people, animals and planet. Thank you!
