The 10% Pledge is often compared to a tithing, which got me wondering: has EA ever tried convincing churches to shift the portion of tithing set aside for charitable donations towards more effective charities?
For example, I was raised LDS (Mormon). The LDS Church sets aside around ~0.7-2% of its received tithing for humanitarian aid, amounting to 50-150 million dollars a year.[1]
Just based on vibes, it seems like affecting which programs that money goes to could be pretty high impact. If anyone has any info on whether this has been tried or not, or ideas for how to go about advocating for more effective tithing use, I would love to hear them.
