In their latest episode "Die Anstalt" highlighted a lot of the core ideas behind effective giving for global health and development that also helped define the EA movement as it is today. They utilized the 'How Rich Am I?' calculator from Giving What We Can to highlight the significant financial resources the average citizen of a Western nation has. They briefly discussed some of Peter Singer's philosophical motivations behind effective giving. Since most of their episodes reach around 1-3 million viewers it is safe to assume that a significant portion of their audience has not previously been confronted with these ideas. This exposure can serve as another stepping stone leading to a more widespread adoption of Earning to Give in the general public.
Although I was pleased to find these themes presented, the episode did not address the massive discrepancy in effectiveness between different charities (and therefore the importance of effective giving). Additionally, no EA organizations (like Giving What We Can or Effektiv Spenden) were explicitly mentioned, even though it would have fit the context of the show.
Still, given that GiveDirectly remains a reasonably cost-effective charity, and that introducing these discussions into mainstream media can have ripple effects of its own, I view this as a very positive signal that I wanted to share with the EA community.
