Hello! I'm Toby. I'm Content Strategist at CEA. I work with the Online Team to make sure the Forum is a great place to discuss doing the most good we can. You'll see me posting a lot, authoring the EA Newsletter and curating Forum Digests, making moderator comments and decisions, and more.

Before working at CEA, I studied Philosophy at the University of Warwick, and worked for a couple of years on a range of writing and editing projects within the EA space. Recently I helped run the Amplify Creative Grants program, to encourage more impactful podcasting and YouTube projects. You can find a bit of my own creative output on my blog, and my podcast feed.

I mentioned in the Essays on Longtermism competition announcement that we would hopefully expect the winners to the competition to be announced on November 4th. In fact it now looks like I'll be announcing them during the week of 10-16 November.

Apologies for the delay. It isn't the judges' fault, they're doing great. I'll be on a CEA wide retreat next week and I want to make sure I have time to write a proper post to celebrate the winners.

Rob Wiblin is interviewing Will MacAskill for the 80K podcast - this time on the better futures series. You can leave your questions for the interview in the response to this tweet

Welcome Shen!
I've heard about St. John's through the partially examined life philosophy podcast, sounds like a blast. Hope you find this Forum valuable, let me know if you have any questions about the Forum, or EA in general,
Cheers,
Toby (Content Strategist for the EA Forum)

We've passed the deadline for the essays on longtermism competition! Thanks to everyone who took part. I'm getting to work with the judges now, and we should have the results in a couple of weeks. If you were drafting something and missed the deadline, please do consider posting regardless, with the competition tag. You won't be eligible for a prize or judging, but you might be included in summaries/ a best-of sequence (and I'd very much like to read your essay).

Also a reminder that anywhere on earth may mean that the deadline is on Tuesday for you (as it is for me). Maybe more simply - the deadline is 12pm Tuesday UTC.

Interesting - why do you think that?

Reminder: The deadline for the 'Essays on Longtermism' competition is this coming Monday (specifically the end of October 20th, anywhere on earth). If you've been thinking of entering, this weekend is your chance! Consider nudging any friends who mentioned wanting to enter. $1000 top prize, many wonderful judges.

Haha yes this is true - and at the risk of ruining the fun (in the same way a joke is ruined when you explain it), things which help the community have fun together can be justified in terms of retention/ motivation. So entertainment per se isn't bad, it's just a reason for some extra scepticism.
